Ponyo - An Ode to Betta Fish

Resplendent Betta fish with bright colours,
And gracefully flowing, finely formed fins,
Make them fishes people will watch for hours;
Elegantly swimming with turns, twists and spins.
Their first name of Siamese fighting fish,
Gives clue to their fierce, aggressive natures,
Being the finest fish, is each one’s great wish,
Flaring at their own reflected features.
Puffing up gills to appear fierce and huge
With fins erect, winning by subterfuge.

In nature all bettas are green but when.
Bred for tanks, all colours of the rainbow.
Bodies dark blue, black or brown but then,
Fins and tails red, bright blue and indigo,
Our Ponyo is a Mustard gas betta,
His long flowing dorsal fin meets his tail,
Folding like rose petals, so much finer,
Than a rose and never will fade or fail.
Nothing can beat this contenders’ huge flare,
Nor defeat him, by tactics foul or fair.

Ponyo’s vast vivid yellow fins and tail,
Set on dark blue body make him a king.
To flare at his neighbours he’ll never fail,
But his separate tank prevents fighting.
Whilst no other betta rivals Ponyo,
Igneel the fire dragon ranks as his peer,
With his sweeping fiery red tail aglow,
From his flare all rivals withdraw in fear.
Every betta is so beautiful,
Their colours shine as brightly as a jewel
